(Re: “Reagan OK’d for Park Site,” NBI, 2/25:)

“Moving to end a surprisingly contentious dispute over whether and where to erect a statue of President Reagan in the city, the council voted 5-2 Tuesday night to OK the work .” – Roger Bloom.

Some like myself, might think “contentious” a very kind, understatement by Mr. Bloom.

Many attending the Arts Commission meeting Thursday described themselves as proud Democrats.  At one point, as Councilman Curry ticked off what he believed were Reagan’s greatest accomplishments, the proud Democrats shouted the Councilman down, forcing him to skip to the end of his remarks.

In Costa Mesa, at the podium Acosta accused Mansoor and Councilman Eric Bever of trying to run Latinos out of the city and called them racists before urging his supporters to stand. When Mansoor objected to the audience standing, Acosta urged them on, in a staged effort to disrupt the meeting

The Muslim Student Union at UC Irvine disrupted a speech by the Israeli ambassador as members of the audience and then stood up, one by one, and shouted the ambassador down more than a dozen times.

Organizers for Jewish Voice for Peace said they, too, had committed the crime of interrupting a speaker,  or event to make a political point by brownshirt tactics.

What is the common thread between these groups and 100 UCI faculty members, including five deans who support these types of actions?  Democrats and the Democratic Party.  As John Locke, considered the Father of Liberalism,  professed, you can not have a civilized society without tolerance. Something the Democratic Party and Democrats are seriously lacking, whether on the college campus or city council meetings or the grounds of City Hall.

To the Newport Beach City Council,

By voting to approve the statue of Ronald Reagan that will rest on city property, this council has demonstrated to the entire city that they feel that they are not held accountable by the rules and regulations that apply to all other citizens of Newport Beach.

Now, I am all for a Democratic Republic in which our elected officials make decisions based on what they think is best.  I am not in favor of a City Council that violates it’s own policies when it suits them, as this council has clearly done so on this issue.

Do their actions concern anyone else in town?

Yes, the greater good is teaching people (especially kids) that in a representative democracy, the majority rules after all is said and done, as long as everyone’s rights, including minorities rights are protected.

Also the greater good of teaching that when when a minority group tries to scream the loudest to stop a perfectly legitimate process of government from going forward, that should not be tolerated.

Also more importantly that ALL U.S. President deserve to be honored in this country no matter what political party they belong, and that individual personal effort to do so (not costing taxpayers money) should not be discouraged by govt. because it might offend someone with a differing view of who is to be honored.

(Re: “History, in Person,” NBI 2/25:)

Lt. Col. Alexander Jefferson (USAF, Ret.) is a huge hero in my book.

Without fanfare, he sat
quietly and spoke individually to people who asked him questions. It was truly an
honor to meet him, however briefly, and thank him in person for his service and fortitude
in WWII.

To think that the Tuskegee airmen never lost a B-17 flying over Europe
towards Germany is a testiment to their skills and determination to achieve while suffering bravely through the emotions of prejudice. Many white American pilots owe their lives to these men. Of the 900+ that became airmen, some 66 lost their lives
defending freedom.

They are heroes in the fullest meaning of that word.
