Wish Kids Take a Cruise

Local Make-A-Wish kids had a special cruise in Newport Harbor on July 4, complete with games, prizes and a special guest.

“The Fourth of July meant more than apple pie and fireworks for many of our local wish children,” Colleen Donovan, PR and development coordinator for MAW of Orange County and Inland Empire wrote in an email.

The kids, along with family and wish staff members, boarded a triple-decker yacht for a cruise in the harbor. More than 200 people gathered in the early morning in Newport Beach to celebrate the holiday.

Kids danced, played games and tried their luck spinning a prize wheel while on board Electra Cruises yacht Eternity. The boat docked briefly at the American Legion where guests were greeted by Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and were served a pancake breakfast.

“The men and women of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department participate in numerous community based events each and every year, including granting individual wishes,” said Jay Wasserman of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. “It is our distinct pleasure to be able to participate in this event with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and bring a few hours of respite and joy to the children and their families.”

Make-A-Wish foundation Development Manager Sarah Pizzaruso presented a plaque to Michael Sweig of the Orange County Sheriff’s Advisory Council for his continued support of the foundation.

The cruise was sponsored by Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol, Electra Cruises, the American Legion Post 291 Family and Ace Parking.

“There aren’t many events where we see our wish kids all come together in one place,” Pizzaruso said. “Being able to witness it was really special. It was an amazing day.”
