Dancing With Teachers Raises $6,000

Teachers boogied down last week to help raise money for the Newport Harbor High School dance team.

A few of the instructors even had moves like Jagger.

Spanish teacher Carlos Alcazar took the top prize Tuesday night and the “Swagtastic” moves of Dr. Karin Nieto-Chaney, a science teacher, and Corrie Rausch, special education and resource specialist program teacher, made them the Wednesday night champions. The winners received a mirror ball trophy to display in their classrooms.

The entire event raised about $6,000 for the team, said coach Julie Simmons.

“It was a big success,” Simmons said.

The auditorium was packed, she said.

Teachers danced various styles alongside members of the dance team. Audience members voted for their favorite and a winner was crowned at the end of each night.

This was the first year of the event and Simmons said she hopes to hold dancing fundraiser again next year.

The dancing event was held in the Robert B. Wentz Theater in the Norman Loats Performing Arts Center. Tickets included one ballot vote for a teacher, additional vote tickets were also available at the event.

The event was sponsored by the Newport Harbor High School Dance Boosters.
