Following the success of the 31st Annual Newport-Mesa Spirit Run, the nonprofit public benefit corporation that presents the event will donate more than $60,000 in cash and services to the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

The funds and services are to be dispersed roughly equally among the NMUSD schools.

Newport-Mesa Spirit Run, Inc. held the event March 23 at Fashion Island and had 20 schools participate.

Since it began presenting the event in 2011, NMSRI has donated over $200,000 to schools throughout NMUSD.

The Youth Running Program Division provided two months of free training for the event to many students. NMSRI also assisted running clubs at seven other district elementary schools.

With the support of the Rotary Club of Newport Balboa, NMSRI provided scholarships for entry fees to roughly 300 underprivileged NMUSD students, and provided free bus transportation for students and families from nine Costa Mesa schools.

The city of Newport Beach was Spirit Run’s 2014 Adult 5k Race Title Sponsor. Co-sponsors included Whole Foods, Fashion Island, Fletcher Jones Motorcars, Gold Arrow Camp, Regal Entertainment Group, Keurig, the Daruty Family, and the Rotary Club of Newport Balboa. Other corporate sponsors included the Counter, Ralphs, New Balance, Wynn Orthodontics, Pension Benefits Unlimited, the Daily Pilot, and 790 KABC Talk Radio.
