Four-time major champion Ernie Els has committed to play to the Hoag Classic at Newport Beach Country Club in March, tournament officials announced this week.

The 2019 Presidents Cup International team captain has achieved 72 career victories, four of those being major championships. Els is one of six golfers to twice win both the U.S. Open and The Open Championship.

“We are excited to announce the commitment of Ernie Els for this year’s Hoag Classic,” Hoag Classic executive director Jeff Purser wrote in a prepared statement. “Attracting a field of professional players that rival any major championship in golf, we are proud to host an event that not only contributes to the health and vitality our community, but creates a compelling competition for our fans to enjoy.”

He will join Hoag newcomers Retief Goosen, Angel Cabrera and Tim Herron, who are expected to be among 80 players competing in the 2020 tournament.

Celebrating its 25th year, the Hoag Classic, with Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian as its title sponsor, draws players for PGA TOUR Champions, a membership organization for professional golfers age 50 and older. In March, they will compete for a $1.8 million purse.

Good-Any-One-Day tickets for the Hoag Classic are available online before the event for $25. Tickets purchased at the Main Gate on the day of the event are $30. Tickets can also be purchased in advance at participating Roger Dunn Golf Stores. Children age 11 and under receive complimentary admission.

On March 7, all active duty, military reserve, national guard, military retirees and veterans — and up to three of their guests — will receive complimentary entry, food, and beverages. Military Appreciation Day is sponsored by CoreLogic.

On March 8, all students 18 years old and younger will receive complimentary entry. Children can enjoy the Kids Fun Zone, which includes games, prizes, and a putting contest to win tournament merchandise and tickets to local attractions. Youth Day is sponsored by Kingston Technology.

The Hoag Classic will be held from March 4 to 8.
