Tom Johnson has been named the 2011 Citizen of the Year by the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce.

Johnson, former publisher of the Newport Beach Independent and Laguna Beach Independent and, before that, of the Times Community News group, will be formally honored at the Citizen of the Year Gala at the Fairmont Newport Beach on June 17.

The award honors longstanding commitment to the Newport Beach community and to making it better.

Johnson is a two-time chairman of Hoag Hospital’s 552 Club; past president of the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce; past skipper of the Newport Beach Commodores Club; current board member and past chairman of Visit Newport Beach Inc.; presently on the boards of the Orange County Youth Sports Foundation (as president), the Newport Harbor Area Boys and Girls Club, Choose Nursing/Choose Hoag, CM900 and on the Advisory Committee of the Assistance League.

He was named Costa Mesa Man of the Year in 1998, Commodore of the Year in 1999, and he received the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Silver Anchor Award in 2006 and Hoag Hospital’s Presidents Circle Award in 2007.
