Newport Beach Fire Captain Alex Amat took the gold in the Men’s Open division of the Scott’s Firefighter Combat Challenge this weekend at the Western States Police & Fire Games being held in Ontario.

Dressed in full “bunker” gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus, pairs of competitors race head-to-head up a five-story tower. The race is as technical as it is exhausting. Each firefighter must complete a series of tasks, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and rescuing a 165-pound “victim” as they race against themselves, their opponents and the clock.

More than 4,000 police and firefighters from 11 states are competing in 64 events at the Games, being held this week at the Ontario Convention Center and other Southern California sports venues. For information, visit www.wspfg2011.org.
