A quick look at the things that made news this week in Newport Beach:

– Rebecca Lee McLauglin, 48, has plead guilty to a count of attempted murder of a peace officer, another of using a non-firearm in assault on a peace officer, and another for assault with a deadly weapon.
McLauhlin broke through a barricade at John Wayne airport last month and sent a police officer, who was trying to stop her, flying through the air.
A pretrial motion is scheduled for next month.

– Newport-Mesa Unified School District students measured a decline in standardized testing scores, reported the Daily Pilot.
Accordingly, 67.8 percent of students tested proficiently in math, and 66.2 percent in language arts. Those are 0.4 and 0.6 decreases, respectively, from last year.
Since 2003, test scores had always increased.

– Newport Beach-based ExplorOcean is showing an exhibit through October at John Wayne Airport.
The “Inspire, Eduacte, Explore: ExplorOcean” exhibit is displaying antique ship models, maritime navigation artifacts, and other oceanographic features.
The display is part of the “Orange County: Destination Art and Culture” exhibit along the pedestrian walkway between Terminal B and C.

– Jon Michael Hall of Newport Beach was convicted after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor count of agreeing to engage in prostitution. This is the second time Hill has been convicted of the same crime.
Hill was caught in the act, picking up a woman and taking her to a motel. The area Hill was trolling, Beach Boulevard and Rome Avenue in Anaheim, was also being patrolled by an Orange County Sherriff’s deputy who knew the area to be high trafficked for prostitution and sexual exploitation of women and underage girls.
He was sentenced to 45 days in jail and three years of informal probation.

– In response to Newport-based Westport Properties’ ban on glue traps to kill mice, PETA praised the company and awarded them a Compassionate Company Award.
Westport Properties kicked glue traps after PETA notified them of the specific cruelty the traps present mice and other animals.

– Newport and Laguna Beach firefighters rescued an injured hiker from Crystal Cove State Park this week, reported Patch.com
