Gallery Sonder is hosting “After the Dust Settles” March 20 through May 10, the first solo exhibition in the United States by German artist Ruben Benjamin.
Exploring painting and sculpture as enmeshed disciplines, Benjamin presents a body of work shaped by pressure, movement, and accretion, where material processes cultivate shifting experiences of light, depth, and perception.
Benjamin’s wall-based works are built through layered pigments, compressed air, and industrial materials that form dense, tactile surfaces. Light is not depicted but emerges through the interaction of color, texture, and physical depth, changing subtly with the viewer’s perspective.

The exhibition also introduces a new series of stone works, expanding Benjamin’s material vocabulary into fully sculptural form.
Carved directly into stone, these pieces begin with acts of incision and erosion. Benjamin exposes raw strata before building pigment back into the surface, transforming removal into creation. Color settles into the carved recesses, activating the marble’s topography while maintaining the material’s inherent weight and stillness.
Where the wall works accumulate outward, the stone pieces open inward, ushering the practice toward a more durational and sculptural register.
Ruben Benjamin (b. 1994) lives and works in Munich. His work has been included in private and public collections internationally, with works held in cities including Los Angeles, New York, Stockholm, London, and Seoul. His portfolio includes significant commissions, including an installation for the Vacheron Constantin art collection.
There will be an opening reception Friday March 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. Gallery Sonder is at 3435 E. Coast Hwy, Corona del Mar.
