Authorities have identified the man who was pulled from Newport Harbor and later died at the hospital in the early morning hours on Monday.

Donald Griffin, 49, died Monday at 12:40 a.m. at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, according to the coroner’s office at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Cause of death was ruled as a drowning.

Newport Beach Police Department started receiving calls that someone was yelling for help in the harbor area around 11:45 p.m. Sunday, said NBPD spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella.

“The reports came from addresses along Via Lido Soud,” she explained in an email.

Police officers, fire and lifeguard personnel, and the harbor department responded to the scene.

At 12:15 a.m., Griffin was located off shore in the 500 block of Via Lido Soud, Manzella said.

He was in full cardiac arrest when he was pulled from the water, she wrote. Paramedics began lifesaving treatment and transported him to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where he was later pronounced dead.
