Sage Hill School hosted students from across the county on Saturday in their fifth annual Mathematics Invitational.

Seventh and eighth graders from Orange County independent schools participated, many of whom do not have other opportunities to compete in mathematics, according to SHSMI organizers.

A team of seven Sage juniors and seniors spent much of the school year planning the event.

The students gathered on the Newport Coast campus for a “one-day math competition that tests students in categories from mental math to probability and algebra.”

There were four students per team and twenty teams from schools throughout Southern California who competed within six different categories.

Several Newport Beach students finished with top honors during the event.

The Pegasus School sent two teams of seventh graders and two teams of eighth graders to compete in their grade divisions. Pegasus teams placed in the top three for both grade divisions.

Several local kids were included in the Pegasus teams: Eighth graders Tyler Wong from Newport Beach, Alex Christiano from Corona del Mar, and Shreya Patel from Newport Coast; and seventh grader Daniel Min from Newport Coast.

Min and his teammates, Ryan Pham (Westminster), Samuel Abraham (Fountain Valley), Andrew Lee (Irvine), won the Measurement and the Data and Analysis portions, and placed second in the Algebra and Logic portion. The group placed second overall in the seventh grade division.

The other Pegasus seventh grade team, Chirag Singh (Irvine), Karen Cho (Irvine), Rahul Patel (Huntington Beach), and Kareena Bhakta (Irvine), placed first overall for their division. This team also earned either first in the Mental Math, Algebra and Logic, and Geometry portions. The came in second in Data and Analysis.

Newport Coast eighth grader Shreya Patel’s team, including Kathy Nguyen-Le (Santa Ana), Conan Lam (Fountain Valley), and Alex Desbans (Irvine), were first in the Measurement category and placed second in Algebra and Logic. Overall, their group finished in third place.

Newport eighth graders Wong and Christiano also participated with their teammates: Sahir Patel (Huntington Beach) and Nick Karahalios (Huntington Beach).

This year marks the fourth that Pegasus students have competed in the Math Invitational and placed in the top three.

Pegasus coaches included eight grade math teacher, Dustan Bridges, and seventh grade math teacher, Remy Carl.
