City to Hold Earthquake Drill

The Newport Beach Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team will conduct its first multi-neighborhood emergency preparedness drill on Saturday, a press release announced on Wednesday.

The drill will simulate a 7.2 earthquake on the Newport-Inglewood fault, explained city life safety specialist and community preparedness coordinator, Matt Brisbios, in the announcement.

There will be eight neighborhoods participating: Balboa Island, Lido Isle, Broadmoor Hills, Crystal Cove, Granville, Irvine Terrace, Dover Shores and Cameo Shores/Highlands. Each CERT group will follow their neighborhood activation procedures and will set-up an incident command post.

“CERT volunteers from these eight neighborhoods will then be deployed to do a simulated check of all residents within their communities,” Brisbios writes in the message. “Simulated ‘disaster’ incidents will be spread throughout each community for them to find and to discuss how they would respond.”

The drill will also test how information is passed through radio communications and the use of twitter.

For more information, contact Matt Brisbois at [email protected] or call (949) 644-3112.
