With the London Olympics fast approaching, several Newport Beach residents are taking more than a passing interest. A few are in training to participate as athletes or, in at least one case, a coach in the quadrennial competition and celebration, the pinnacle of achievement in many sports. Many others are ready to cheer on their family members, friends or neighbors.
* Newport Harbor alum April Ross, who still lives in Newport, and her beach volleyball partner will be representing the USA in their fast and furious sport. Read about Ross here.
* Zander Kirkland, a transplant from Bermuda to Newport’s shores, where he is a sailing standout and one-time instructor at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club and Newport Harbor High, will be representing his home nation along with his brother Jesse in the 49er Class. Read about Kirkland here.
* And a bit of the Olympics will come to Newport this weekend as the US men’s water polo team, which includes CdM High alum John Mann as a player and Newport Harbor water polo coach Robert Lynn as an assistant coach, takes to the pool at NHHS in a pre-Olympic showcase that also includes teams from Croatia and Hungary.
