Man Shot, Killed at Medical Office Near Hoag; Suspect ID’d

A man was shot and killed Monday in an office near Hoag Hospital, authorities said.

Police quickly located and arrested Stanwood Fred Elkus, 75, of Lake Elsinore, without incident in an office on the second floor of a building at 520 Superior Ave., said Newport Beach Police Department spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.

Reports have indicated that the victim is Dr. Ronald Gilbert, a physician at Orange Coast Urology, although police and the Orange County Coroner’s Office have not yet released the name of the victim.

Police received the call of possible gunshots around 2:45 p.m. About six or seven shots were fired, according to reports.

“The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene,” Lowe wrote in a statement.

Several other people were in the complex at the time of the shooting, but this was an isolated incident, according to police.

“[It] does not represent an ongoing threat to public safety,” Lowe wrote.

No other injuries were reported.

Police have not released any other information about the victim, suspect, or possible motive. It is an ongoing police investigation.

According to his practice’s online bio, Gilbert graduated from the College of Medicine at University of California, Irvine, in 1987, and joined Orange Coast Urology in 1993.v He was married with two children, according to the website.
